Maybe you already frequent the city park on Knickerbocker Avenue and Suydam Street.

It has a newish dog run that’s populated with beautiful, expensive-looking canines and their beautiful, expensive-looking owners.

But maybe you don’t know the park is named after a Hispanic neighborhood hero, Maria Hernandez. The community organizer battled tooth and nail to get drug traffickers off the streets of Bushwick. She was shot to death through the window of her home on Starr Street in 1989.
