Today at 11 a.m. bestselling children’s book author  Doreen Cronin will be sharing her new mysteries series “Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure” with a group of hospitalized children at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn in celebration of Project Sunshine Week, which empowers volunteers to bring free educational, recreational and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families. Cronin attended Pratt and lives in Brooklyn. … The Fresh Air Fund, which provides free summer experiences to New York City children, is kicking off their Summer 2014 registration in Coney Island at 5 p.m. Families can find out more about the program and also sign up for the summer at the event. …

Robert Bailey Thomas was born today in 1766. He was the founder and editor of The Farmer’s Almanac (the first issue of which came out in 1793).

It is Armenian Martyrs Day commemorating the massacre of Armenians under the Ottoman Turks in 1915. Deportations from Turkey began. Also called the Armenian Genocide Memorial Day. Adolf Hitler, in a speech at Obersalzberg in 1939, is said to have said “Who today remembers the Armenian extermination?” in an apparent justification of the Nazis’ use of genocide.

Today is the first day of summer in Iceland.

It is the anniversary of the Library of Congress. In 1800 Congress approved an act providing “for the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress…and for fitting up a suitable apartment for containing them.” Thus began one of the world’s greatest libraries.

On this day in 1980, U.S. marines attempted to free American hostages held at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran. Their helicopters collided at the desert staging area, and eight were killed. No further military rescues were attempted, and the hostages were later released in Jan. 1991.

On this day in 1881, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a list of fashion notes. “The novelty in dress trimming is still embroidery, shading from iron gray to silvery white,” the article reported. “Dresses for the demi-season will be made of silk and wool, and for very light fabrics there will be a return to shirred waists. Half long sleeves will be worn with wholly long gloves.” In the world of beauty, “[f]ace towels of raw silk are the rage at present. They are thought to improve the complexion,” it noted, while in the realm of accessories, the “old set of jewelry used by ladies so long is completely a thing of the past. No fashionable woman now thinks of wearing brooch and earrings alike.”
