Event Promotes Self-Confidence and Individual Beauty in Brooklyn Teens
From the Junior League of Brooklyn
he Junior League of Brooklyn (JLB) is proud to announce it will again make prom dreams a reality for young women in need across the borough through its Annual Belle of the Ball initiative. In its sixth year, the program’s “Day of Beauty,” which provides young women with dresses, shoes, accessories and mini-makeovers, will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at MS 35 - Stephen Decatur Middle School in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section. This year’s event is being run in conjunction with the Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project.
“Our goal is to create an opportunity to promote self-confidence and individual beauty,” said Jen Conway, President of the Junior League of Brooklyn. “We want each young woman in attendance to feel like a princess on prom night and to bring that level of confidence into their lives each day.”
At the event, teens will browse through the collection of formal wear and receive beauty makeovers from local beauticians before modelling their new look on the pink carpet and posing for a professional photograph. High School Seniors in attendance are also eligible for a chance to receive a college scholarship sponsored by the Junior League of Brooklyn and can attend an image workshop prior to the dress giveaway.Registration for event attendees (in grades 8-12) is available at www.2014dayofbeauty.eventbrite.com.
The Belle of the Ball Program has grown immeasurably in recent years thanks to the hard work of the Junior League of Brooklyn and their numerous community partners. From humble beginnings in 2009, when the event served around 50 young women, the event has grown steadily each year with over 165 attendees at the 2013 event. An impressive 94% of attendees went home with dresses and/ or accessories.
