In January 2012, New York Times bestselling author Jen Lancaster announced to her husband that she was embarking on a unique one-year mission: to live her life according to the dictates of Martha Stewart. Lancaster was in a funk after a particularly rough year and recognized she was in need of her own version of “The Happiness Project.” A longtime Martha Stewart fan, Lancaster immersed herself in Martha’s media empire, taking herself, her husband, her pets and her house along for the ride.

Now, Lancaster reveals the results of her social experiment in “The Tao of Martha: My Year of LIVING, or Why I’m Never Getting All That Glitter Off of the Dog” (NAL), to be released in paperback on May 6. From closet organization to craft-making and party-planning to kitchen prep, Lancaster lived her days according to Martha’s dictates and embraced the ultimate piece of Martha’s advice: The only way to fail is not to try.

Lancaster will appear in Brooklyn on May 6 to read from and sign books at the BookMark Shoppe in Bay Ridge.

Much more than a story about how Lancaster got organized and crafty, “The Tao of Martha” is a tale of self-discovery. Hilarious and poignant, the book is an intimate look at the impact the journey had on her marriage, her pets, her friendships, how Jen perceives herself, and how her self-awareness evolved over the course of the year.

The May 6 event begins at 7 p.m. The BookMark Shoppe is located at 8415 3rd Ave. in Bay Ridge.
