Josh Steckel, the lead college counselor at the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BCS), will read from his recently published book “Hold Fast to Dreams” which details the often emotional and heart-wrenching journeys of 10 Brooklyn students that Steckel guided as they gained admission and negotiated life at colleges such as Skidmore, Bates, Williams, Muhlenberg and the City University of New York. The book, co-authored with his wife Beth Zasloff, highlights the personal triumphs of the students while uncovering the many ways that the American education system fails to meet its promise as a ladder of opportunity.

Steckel and Zasloff will be introduced by Steckel’s current and former students, and will read from their book and lead discussion. The authors have also contributed dozens of copies of the book to raise money for the sponsors of the event: the parent associations for BCS and for BNS—the Brooklyn New School—an elementary school which shares a building with BCS and which the authors’ children attend.

The reading will take place Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Dean Street Bar and Restaurant at 755 Dean St. in Prospect Heights.
