Milestones In Faith

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, originally founded in 1893, opened its new sanctuary 105 years ago, on April 11, 1909. It was Easter Sunday. This building, now called the Lower Church, is 240 feet long, beginning at the doors on Fifth Avenue; and 190 feet wide. The  exterior is solid granite and the interior is terra cotta. The seating capacity is 1,800. The parish counted nearly 6,000 members at Masses that day. The Upper Church was completed some 19 years later, in December 1928.
