The weather was warm and the music was hot on Sunday, as families partied and picnicked at Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn for Milagros Day Worldwide’s third annual Mother’s Day walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The event honors mothers and brings attention to the issue of domestic violence, Milagros founder Dawn Diaz told the Brooklyn Eagle.

“Milagros means ‘miracles,’” Diaz said. “It’s about turning abuse into success.” Diaz said the organization teaches leadership skills to survivors of domestic violence “so they will become empowered, and see that there is life after domestic violence.”

Performers included the Black and Gold Marching Elites drum corps, Scarlet Santana, David Anthony Diaz and other musicians. DJ RedG kept the party hopping into the afternoon, while kids and grownups danced, played soccer and chowed down under a tent set up on the War Memorial plaza.

The event kicked off in Manhattan where a number of high-profile guests addressed the marchers, including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz (Red Hook, Sunset Park), UNIVISION News Anchor Merijoel Duran, VH1 TV Star Renee Graziano, Life Coach Karen Hoyos, Community Advocate Tony Herbert, Business Coach Lisa Lieberman-Wang, and Youth Minister Lamor Whiehead.
