The Brooklyn Public Library is giving away free bicycle helmets today from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at their central branch on Grand Army Plaza. They will also be offering free helmet fittings. The giveaway comes in preparation for Saturday’s “Bike the Branches” event. … Brooklyn Bridge Park is holding a Wildflower Walk today guided by Rebecca McMackin, the park’s director of horticulture. The walk is from 5 to 6 p.m. and is free with RSVP. To join the walk, visit brooklynbridgepark.org. … An exhibit of the work of artist Emi Watanabe opens today at 7 p.m. at the Ouchi Gallery in Downtown Brooklyn.

On this day in 1992, three astronauts from the shuttle Endeavour simultaneously walked in space for the first time.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation authorizing U.S.-Canadian construction of a waterway that would make it possible for oceangoing ships to reach the Great Lakes on this day in 1954. The legislation was called the Saint Lawrence Seaway Act.

It is the anniversary of the Philadelphia Police Bombing of 1985. During the siege of the radical group MOVE in Philadelphia, police in a helicopter reportedly dropped a bomb containing the powerful military plastic explosive C-4 on the building in which the group was housed. The bomb and the resulting fire left 11 people dead, including four children, and destroyed 61 homes.

On this day in 1879 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published the following news briefs in article titled “City News and Gossip”:

“Clothes valued at $10 were stolen on Saturday night from the clothes line of Mrs. Anderson, No. 29 Front [S]treet.”

“A concert and reception will be given by the Brooklyn Musical Union at the Lyceum, corner Fourth [S]treet and South Eighth, E.D., Thursday evening.”

“A musical and literary entertainment will be given by the Bedford Removed Church Sabbath School this evening at the corner of Bedford [A]venue and Madison street.”

“Detective Short, yesterday morning, recovered from a Grand [S]treet pawnshop a lot of property stolen from Mrs. Cleary, of North Sixth and Third streets, a month ago. The youths who stole it were arrested and convicted of another offense before Justice Elliot, a few weeks ago, and are at present inmates of the House of Refuge.”

“On Sunday afternoon, there was a meeting of the National Labor Party in Municipal Hall. Mr. John E. Kelley presided, and about one hundred persons were present.”

“Mrs. Catharine O’Neill died Sunday night, at the City Hospital, from effects of burns she received about two weeks ago, at her residence in Schenck [S]treet, near DeKalb [A]venue. It will be remembered that a daughter of Mrs. O’Neill caught fire from the stove, and that the latter in endeavoring to extinguish the flames was frightfully burned. The child died a few days after the occurrence. Dr. Simms held an inquest in the case of Mrs. O’Neill yesterday, and a verdict was returned in accordance with the facts.”
