Brooklyn was dealt a sensational blow when popular restaurant, bar, and wedding venue reBar abruptly shut its doors with only a trite email from owner Jason Stevens stating to employees: “Rebar is bankrupt and closed. Please dispose of your keys and do not enter the premises. Please forward to any staff not included.”  Now out of a job, many former reBar employees are wondering where to turn.

For five weeks this summer subway riders will be able to get a free, above-ground transfer between stations in Williamsburg. The Daily News says riders will be able to switch from G trains at the Broadway station to J or M trains at the Lorimer Street station. Riders will have to walk a few blocks between the stations. The free transfer is being offered while the G train’s Greenpoint Tube under the Newtown Creek is repaired, beginning July 26. The tube suffered damage during Superstorm Sandy. During the project three stations along the G line will be shut. They are Court Square and 21st Street in Queens and Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn. (AP)

The Big East Conference announced Tuesday that its baseball tournament will return to Brooklyn for the first time since 2007 with games played May 22-25 at Coney Island’s MCU Park, home of the Mets’ minor league affiliate. With Nathan’s Famous and the Coney Island boardwalk steps away, the top four teams in the Big East will play in the double-elimination tournament with the winner earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. Creighton, St. John’s and Seton Hall have already clinched Big East tournament berths, with Xavier, Butler, Georgetown and Villanova competing for the final spot. “The sport of baseball has enjoyed a long and rich history in Brooklyn,” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman said in a statement, “and the conference is thrilled to bring our schools to NYC to be a part of the tradition.” (AP)

The latest Medicare fraud sweep has netted 90 arrests in six cities involving false billings to the health care program of an estimated $260 million. Miami U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said Wednesday more than half of the arrests were in South Florida, long the nation’s leader in health care fraud. Arrests were also made in Brooklyn, Houston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Tampa. Among those arrested were 27 health professionals, including 16 doctors, as well as some Medicare beneficiaries who authorities say sell their entitlement to the highest bidders. Another emerging fraud trend is misuse of Medicare’s prescription drug benefit through shady pharmacies. (AP)

Hit-run drivers who eventually get caught would face stiffer jail sentences under a bill passed by the state senate. The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) seeks to increase the penalties for leaving the scene of an accident when a death, injury, or damage of property occurs. Golden said his bill, which was approved by the senate on May 7, would deter drivers from leaving injured victims on the road. It would also facilitate police investigations, and enable timely chemical testing of a driver, he said.

Normally, an upstart program takes a while to get rolling. A year or two, maybe even three seasons before a team can establish some chemistry or a winning mentality. That’s certainly not been the case for coach Felix Alberto’s Blue Pride Panthers boys’ volleyball team at Pearl Street’s Brooklyn Friends School. With Monday’s straight-set (25-8, 25-15, 25-13) victory over Park Slope rival Berkeley Carroll, the Panthers improved to 14-1 overall this season, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Private School Athletic Association action, entering Wednesday afternoon’s regular-season finale against York.
