The ferry from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 brought thousands of visitors to Governors Island over the Memorial Day weekend. Guests, many on bicycles, explored 30 new acres of parks and playgrounds.

Especially popular were the 50 comfy red hammocks installed in Hammock Grove. Until the newly-planted trees have had time to grow, the hammocks are attached to sturdy wooden posts.

Activities and exhibitions, including vintage baseball, concerts and the giant FIGMENT participatory art event are planned for weekends all summer. Works by Mark Handforth and Susan Philipsz, the two inaugural artists of the new Governors Island public art program Art CommissionsGI, are now on view.

For the first time this summer, the island will be open to the public seven days a week. Ferries run from Lower Manhattan all seven days and run from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 on Saturdays, Sundays, and Labor Day.

A round trip on the ferry is now $2, except for weekends before noon, when it’s free.
