On June 14 and 15, Brooklyn-based dance company Bryn Cohn + Artists will premiere its first self-produced evening-length work titled “Into the Dark.” This multimedia performance is about diving into the unknown, into the places where chance meets fear and rescue. Within this intimate and complex piece, the company confronts the human reality of the ways we take risk and the trust, conflict and hope that arise to navigate the journey. Through collaborations within dance, scenic design, music, lighting and costuming, the artists have built an adventure that examines what occurs when we surrender our certainties to a reimagined world of darkness.

“This work is the most ambitious venture we have taken on, and by far the most rewarding,” said artistic director Bryn Cohn. “’Into the Dark’ marks a tremendous milestone for us as a company—the unwavering honesty of the dancers to push their boundaries, the radical sense of invention, and the creative collaborations have catapulted our company to a new level of artistic progression. I am eternally grateful for these creative minds that have charged my vision with humanity, passion, and inspiration to build this comprehensive world onstage.”

Into the Dark” stemmed from a pure collaboration: the movement, narratives and emotions originate from a continuous dialogue and experimental exchange that Cohn and each company member shared throughout their process. This has granted the performers the physical and imaginative power to explore the deepest and most personal facets of what it means to go into the dark.

This unpredictable and exciting performance will inhabit the Center for Performance Research (CPR) in Williamsburg. Panels are designed as part of a continuously evolving architecture, creating recognizable structures such as prisons, mazes, masks and confessionals that elucidate the humanity that sits at the core of the piece. Each element within Into the Dark” interweaves to craft a supernatural universe where fantasy meets tangible manifestations of real life.

Into the Dark” is directed and choreographed by Cohn with original music by Bita Sharif and scenic design by Bita Sharif and David Ebert. Collaborators/performers include Sebastian Arrango, Nikolas Owens, Yuliya Romanskaya and Lauren Santos. The performance takes place at Center for Performance Research (CPR) (361 Manhattan Ave. between Jackson St. and Withers St. near the L/G trains). The June 14 performance begins at 8 p.m. and the June 15 performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets: $12 presale online: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/684024 or $15 at the door.
