Children’s Chorus to donate concert proceeds to Haitian kids

A group of socially conscious kids will raise their voices in song to help children in Haiti still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake.

The Children’s Chorus of Bay Ridge will present their annual concert “Be Our Guest,” on June 8, at Art on the Corner, located at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7420 Fourth Ave., at 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the concert will be donated to Children in Need Haitian Project, an organization that provides educational and health care programs for children in that country. CNN reported that the earthquake that hit Haiti in January of 2010 killed more than 230,000 people, injured 300,000 and displaced 1.5 million.

The concert will also raise money for Counseling in Schools, a program in which clinical psychologists and social workers help at-risk youth stay in school.

“Be Our Guest” will feature Broadway tunes selected by the chorus members themselves. The performance will include songs from “Beauty and the Beast,” Les Miserables,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Willy Wonka,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Seussical the Musical.”

There will be a reception after the concert with refreshments and activities for children, including arts and crafts and face painting.

Under the direction of Rita Pihra-Majurinen, the Children’s Chorus of Bay Ridge is a community chorus for kids in grades one through right. The group cultivates creativity utilizing both music and the arts. There is no audition is required to join the chorus.

Established nine years ago, Art on the Corner is a community-based arts ministry of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where local, city-wide and international artists perform and have shared their art with the communities of southwest Brooklyn. The goal of the ministry is to make the arts accessible to the community. Admission to events is by a suggested donation of $10.
