“A Diamond Is Forever” – the slogan quoted again and again in diamond advertisements even today – is a central theme in Brooklyn author J. Courtney Sullivan’s newest novel, “The Engagements,” which will be featured June 17 at Community Bookstore at 7 p.m.
“The Engagements” weaves between four very different marriages as well as Frances Gerety’s story, the ads woman who coined the famous diamond slogan, as the characters test the accuracy of Gerety’s words.

Conflict residing between each couple includes long-time married couple who are at odds with their son’s divorce; a paramedic who can’t seem to please his wife’s family; a French woman who relocates to America for a fresh, rocky love; and a female character in a relationship, who vows never to get married.

“The Engagements” was listed as one of People Magazine’s Top 10 Books of 2013 and was an Irish Times Best Book of the Year.

A film adaption is in progress through Pacific Standard, Reese Witherspoon’s production company.

Also included in the Community Bookstore event is “Save the Date” by Jen Doll.  Sullivan and Doll will discuss writing about weddings in the “big day” centered event.
Community Bookstore is located at 143 Seventh Ave.
