You say pasta, I say hand pull noodles.
Either way, we get fresh-made, crave-worthy carbs on 18th Avenue.
One version comes from four-decades-old Bensonhurst foodie fave Queen Ann Ravioli & Macaroni Co. at 7205 18th Ave. The shop's proprietor, Alfred Ferrara, has owned the building since 1977.
The other version can be found at 7201 18th Ave., where five-year-old Hand Pull Noodle & Dumpling House is located.
“People like the taste of the home-made noodles,” said restaurant co-owner Jenny Gao, a South China-born Bensonhurst resident who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, as she stirred a huge cauldron of savory beef broth.
Her father-in-law Zli Zhen performed rapid-fire maneuvers with ropes of dough, turning them into noodles that taste perfect in big bowls of soup. Customers often order the one with fried pork chops in it. We give it an A-plus.
“The rent is a little bit high,” said Gao – but family members who own the restaurant don't have the big bucks needed to buy a building. Retail rents on 18th Avenue are around $35 to $45 per square foot these days.
The noodle house's landlord is Bensonhurst resident Frank Gournelos, who owns the building through an LLC, city Finance Department records indicate.
