ON THIS DAY IN 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Daring Escape of a Boy from Children’s Shelter.”
The article focused on William Blanche, 14 at the time, who was charged with an attempt of burglary and escaped from custody while his fellow Michael Preston was at court with the same charges from the incident.
“William Blanche, a boy of the same age who had been arrested with [Preston], had managed in the meanwhile to escapes from the shelter of the Brooklyn Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children,” the article wrote.  Blanche was later caught again with another attempt of burglary.
When he was told by an officer that he may be sent to Catholic Protectory, Blanche was reportedly overjoyed to attend there, saying that he may be able to “learn sumpin.”
