The Brooklyn Cyclones pulled into a tie for first place with a win over Hudson Valley

If the first full week of action is any indicator, the Brooklyn Cyclones will be as exciting a roller-coaster ride as their world-famous namesake this summer on Coney Island.

Recently drafted LSU product Tyler Moore lofted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning as the Baby Bums outlasted the Hudson Valley Renegades, 4-3, on Wednesday night in Wappinger Falls, N.Y., kicking off a five-game road trip with the their second consecutive win.

The Cyclones (4-2), who improved to 2-1 in one-run ball games this season, appeared on their way to a certain loss in the bottom of the ninth when the defending New York-Penn League champions were in position to pull out their fourth walk-off triumph of the young season.

A two-out single by the Renegades’ Wilmer Dominguez sent Coty Blanchard scurrying around third on his way to the plate with the potential winning run in the ninth.

But Brooklyn right fielder Michael Bernal, who went 0-for-4 at the plate Wednesday, saved the game with his arm.

Bernal gunned down Blanchard at home for the final out, and Brooklyn rallied for the winning score in the top half of the next frame as hot-hitting Joe Tuschak reached on an error and eventually stepped on the plate following Moore’s fly ball to left.

Reliever Brandon Welch (2-0) picked up the win in relief after Cyclones starter Alberto Baldonado yielded one run over 5 2/3 solid frames, engaging in a pitchers’ duel with Hudson Valley’s Hunter Wood.

Welch was victimized for a pair of unearned runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings, but picked up his second victory out of the bullpen when Shane Bay worked around a walk in the bottom of the 10th for his first save of the year.

Tuschak finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for Brooklyn, which also got a 2-for-4 performance at the plate from third baseman Jose Urena.

The Cyclones shoot for a three-game sweep of Hudson Valley Thursday night before embarking on a three-game set in Aberdeen against the IronBirds.

They’ll be back at MCU Park on Monday night to once again host the Renegades.
