PILATES with the Fitness Guru, a free Pilates class that takes place on Tuesdays, will meet today at 7 p.m. at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn.  The class will “teach you to properly activate the muscles of your abdomen and back to create an incredible amount of stability in your torso,” Brooklynbridgepark.org says.

BROOKLYN AUTHOR Nicole C. Kear’s new novel, “Now I See You,” will be released at BookCourt today at 7 p.m. The release party will also feature a reading, audience Q&A and book signing.  “Now I See You” is Kear’s memoir of her journey as she becomes legally blind.  

OPEN MIC NIGHT at Jalopy Theater and School of Music, Red Hook, will take place tonight from 9 to 11:30 p.m.  The open mic performances range from different music genres and poetic styles.  This is an ongoing and free event.

BOXING CHAMPION Jack Dempsey, of New York City, was born on this day in 1895.  Dempsey was known as “The Manassa Mauler” and was world heavyweight boxing champion from 1919 to 1926.  After his boxing career, he was a NYC restaurant operator.

TODAY IS John the Baptist Day.  This holiday celebrates the birth of John the Baptist, a Christian saint.

GUSTAVUS SWIFT was born on this day in 1839.  Swift was an American industrialist known for revolutionizing the meatpacking industry.  He commissioned the development of the refrigerator car.  Swift died in Chicago in 1903.

ON THIS DAY in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Smallpox Sufferer at the Health Office.” The article focuses on a young boy with smallpox who was brought to Brooklyn from Rockaway Beach.  
“The patient was a weeping small boy, who knew his fate,” the article wrote.  “There was no attempt at isolation of the small boy, who was led into one of the rooms which is frequently opted by persons seeking advice.”
