The first in a series of free outdoor yoga lessons sponsored by two Bay Ridge lawmakers took place in Shore Road Park on June 24, attracting an enthusiastic crowd of 100 participants looking to limber up and find inner peace in a bucolic setting.

“We had a great turnout for our first yoga in the park,” Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) told the Brooklyn Eagle in a text message. Malliotakis is teaming up with state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) to sponsor a series of four classes in Shore Road Park. Malliotakis and Golden are partnering with Yoga in Bay Ridge, a yoga studio on Fourth Avenue and 5 Boro Power Yoga on Staten Island to offer the outdoor lessons.

For the first session, Malliotakis and Golden not only sponsored the event, they took part in the class, stretching and posing along with the other participants.

The classes will run now through August in Shore Road Park, providing a fun and relaxing way to improve physical health and mental well-being, according to Malliiotakis.

There are three remaining yoga in the park dates. The classes are held in Shore Road Park (enter at 79th Street and Shore Road). The upcoming dates are: Saturday, July 19, at 9 a.m.; Tuesday, August 12, at 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday, August 30, at 9 a.m.

Classes are primarily directed toward beginners, but there will be options for those with a more advanced practice. Participants are advised to bring a yoga mat or towel and arrive 15 minutes early to prepare for the lesson.

Malliotakis, who has been practicing yoga since her college days, said it’s not only great exercise, but a great stress reducer as well. “It’s a great way to unwind. You learn to focus on your breathing and relax,” she told the Eagle.

It’s also a great activity to do with someone you know, Malliotakis said. “These events will offer a great chance to unwind with friends and neighbors,” she said.

Bob Boles, owner of Yoga in Bay Ridge, said yoga has numerous health benefits. “It’s great exercise. It’s a good way to relax and learn meditation. It’s an ancient practice. It helps people deal with stress and anxiety,” he told the Eagle in a recent interview.

“After a very long and cold winter, residents are looking for more and more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. I am proud to be partnering with my colleague, Assemblywoman Malliotakis, and I invite our community to take part in yoga, which is good for the mind, body and soul,” Golden said.

Space is limited, so participants are urged to reserve a spot by contacting Golden’s office at 718-238-6044, Malliotakis’ office at 718-987-0197, or by emailing [email protected] indicating which classes they plan to attend.
