A PAPERBACK LAUNCH OF “FAIRYLAND” BY ALYSIA ABBOTT will be held at The Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo today at 7 p.m.  The “Fairyland” launch will feature Abbott with “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic” author Alison Bechdel as the moderator.  Abbott’s memoir focuses on her growing up motherless with an openly gay father in the ’70s and ’80s.

AN EVENT FEATURING LILY KING’S “EUPORIA” AND SUSAN MINOT’S “THIRTY GIRLS” will take place at Community Bookstore tonight at 7 p.m.  “Euphoria” is loosely based on the life of Margaret Mead and “Thirty Girls” is about a journalist who travels to Uganda.

TODAY IS CHIMBORAZO DAY, which is meant to recognize the fact that Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador, pokes farther into space than any other mountain on Earth.  (Mount Everest’s distance from sea level is 13 miles fewer than that of Chimborazo due to the location and sea level difference at the equator.)

THE FIRST WOMAN RABBI IN THE U.S. WAS ORBAINED on this date in 1972.  Sally Jan Priesand, of New York City, was an assistant rabbi at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue.

CHARLES RICHARD DREW was born on this date in 1904.  Drew was an African-American physician who discovered how to store blood plasma during WWII.  He died in 1950.

ALLEN GINSBERG was born on this date in 1926.  The late Ginsberg was a poet of the Beat Generation and a social activist.  Famous poems by Ginsberg include “Howl” and “Kaddish.”  He died in 1997.

JEWISH HOLIDAY SHAVUOT BEGINS AT SUNDOWN. The holiday is the Jewish Pentecost.

THE GEMINI 4 (U.S.) made a space milestone on this date in 1965 when James McDivitt and Edward White made 66 orbits of Earth.  White took the first spacewalk for the U.S.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Big Sea Fight Planned for the American Navy.” The article wrote about a “sham fight” that was planned to take place off of Fishers Island.  
“The battle will present all of the realism of an actual engagement,” the article wrote.  “Every available vessel of the North Atlantic station will be pressed into this battle.”
