All-star teacher to represent Mets at All-Star game

Renan Ebeid of Lincoln High to represent All-Star game

The New York Mets don’t have a lot of players to send to this year’s All-Star Game, but they will be represented by an all-star teacher.

Renan Ebeid, assistant principal and athletic director at Lincoln High School, has been chosen to represent the Mets in the All-Star Teachers program during a pregame ceremony at Target Field before the game. She is one of 30 teachers chosen that will represent each team.

“I didn’t even know anything about this until somebody at MLB called me to let me know that I was nominated and that they had narrowed it down to three teachers and that I was one of them,” she said. “I love my job, I love dealing with the kids and everything I’ve done has been with them in mind. I want the kids to feel like Lincoln is their second home.”

Ebeid has a long list of accomplishments that includes getting a new football field, lights and fitness center. She has raised millions of dollars to get to this point.

“It all started with Adele Cohen,” she said of the former Brooklyn politician. “I was trying to raise money, and I didn’t know how to start… . I just sent letters to a lot of the local politicians and she reached out to me and told me not to ever stop. She helped us with so much, including a dance studio and upgrading sound systems.”

From there, Ebeid took it further. She reached out to Marty Markowitz for help with the field and then-councilman Domenic Recchia.

“It’s good to see people get recognized for hard work,” said Dwayne “Tiny” Morton, Lincoln’s former basketball coach. “She’s a good person and works tirelessly for the kids and sometimes people don’t appreciate that.”

Ebeid has a degree in physical education and two master’s degrees. She has raised more than $7 million to upgrade Lincoln’s facilities including a new fitness center to encourage kids to live healthier lifestyles and was recognized by the Lincoln students and faculty with the Most Influential Staff Member of the Year award and an Educator of the Week award from the teacher’s union for her tireless efforts.

“She just does so much for the school that it’s amazing,” basketball coach Kenny Pretlow said. “I think the most amazing thing about her is how she finds the time to do it all.”

The MLB All-Star Game will be held on July 15 on Fox starting at 8:00 p.m., but don’t forget to tune in early at 7:30 p.m. to see Ebeid honored along with 29 other teachers from across the nation.
