Bay Ridge is THE place to be on Friday night as the first of four Summer Stroll on 3rd events takes place.

Third Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from Bay Ridge Avenue to 80th Street from 6 to 10 p.m. so that a pedestrian mall can be created and people can feel free to stretch their legs, enjoy live music, hunt for bargains at a leisurely pace and sip cappuccinos in outdoor cafes.

Opera companies, folk singers, rock and rollers and dance troupes will be out on the sidewalk to entertain pedestrians.

And organizers are promising a variety of activities to keep pedestrians entertained.

What’s a Summer Stroll without a scavenger hunt? The sponsors have organized one for kids and adults alike. Pick up information at the scavenger hunt table on Third Avenue and 79th Street. There are lots of prizes to be won!

The Pour House, 7901 Third Ave., will have outdoor seating and music. H.I.T. Factory, 7918 Third Ave., will offer demonstrations and entertainment.

There will be four Summer Stroll events this year. The second event, to take place on Friday, July 25, will also run from Bay Ridge Avenue to 80th Street. On Aug. 8 and 15, the event moves to the southern end of the avenue. The blocks located between 80th and 90th Streets will get their turn to host the Summer Stroll.

The Merchants of Third Avenue, a business organization representing store owners on the avenue, is working with state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) and Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) to sponsor the Third Annual Summer Stroll on 3rd event.

Summer Stroll is run under the auspices of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and is part of that agency’s Weekend Walks program, a citywide endeavor designed to open up the streets to pedestrians.
