NELSON MANDELA was born on this day in 1918. The former South African president was born the son of a Tembu tribal chieftain at Qunu. Mandela chose to become a lawyer and earned his degree at the University of South Africa. His activities as deputy national president resulted in him being jailed for 28 years. He was released on Feb. 11, 1990, and elected president of South Africa in 1994. Mandela died in 2013. The United Nations has a recognized holiday for Mandela that falls on this day.

EVENTS at Brooklyn Bridge Park this weekend include Shakespeare at Sunset: “Taming of the Shrew,” kayaking opportunities and a hip-hop dance aerobics class. The “Taming of the Shrew” event is a free performance that takes place today and starts at Granite Prospect at 7 p.m. Kayaking experiences are available for all experience levels Saturday at the Pier 2 Dock at 5:30 p.m. A hip-hop dance class will be held on Friday at the Pier 2 Promenade.
A COMMUNITY PAINTING DAY will take place today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Domino Sugar Factory site in Williamsburg. The event is meant to collaborate in completing a 200-foot long mural, sponsored by El Puente and Los Sures.

ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Big War Maneuvers in Long Island Sound Will Begin at Midnight.”
The article focuses on a war game of two squadrons who were set to fight for possession of the eastern entrance to Long Island Sound.
“The game will be played principally for the benefit of the amateur tars of eight coastline states,” the article reported.
