EARNEST HEMINGWAY was born on this day in 1899.  Hemingway was an American author who made a name for himself with works “The Sun Also Rises,” “A Farewell to Arms” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”  He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1899.  He died in 1961.  

THE LOWEST RECORDED temperature in history was recorded on this day in 1983 at the USSR Vostok Station in Antarctica. The temperature was 128.6 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.  

“LAND OF LOVE AND DROWING” by Brooklyn author Tiphanie Yanique will be featured at BookCourt tonight at 7 p.m.  The event will feature a reading, audience Q&A and book signing.  

AN OUTDOOR STRENGTH class will take place at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 Promenade tonight at 7:30 p.m. The event includes a strength training and aerobic intervals with Brooklyn Strength.  

ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Lightning Fires Church; Worshippers are Unhurt.”  The article focused on a lightning storm that damaged a Brooklyn church.  

“Lightning which accompanied two heavy thunderstorms, one of which came to town last night and the other this morning, did much damage in Brooklyn and Coney Island, where it seemed to center” the article reported.  “A bolt struck the monster stone cross surmounting the roof of the R.C. Church of Our Guardian Angel.”
