ON THIS DAY in 1917, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Mercury Hits 94; Summer’s Hottest.”  The article focused on the hottest day of the year (up to that point) in 1917.  “Somebody left the door of Sheol open today and New York got the benefit,” the article reported.  “One could see the city fairly curl up in the fact of a temperature that reached 94 degrees at 2 o’clock.  It was the mercury’s best effort of the season and within one degree of its best record for the date, 95 in 1913.”
