New York State is holding onto billions of dollars and some of that money could belong to you.

Councilman Mark Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli are teaming up to help southern Brooklyn residents determine if they have money coming to them out of the state’s “unclaimed funds” holdings.

Unclaimed funds are monies turned over to the state for safekeeping from dormant bank accounts, insurance policies, mortgage insurance refunds, stocks and dividends, trust funds, safe deposit boxes and other forgotten accounts. Once an account has been dormant for five years, the funds are turned over to the New York State comptroller’s office. The comptroller holds onto the unclaimed funds until someone steps forward to claim them.

Treyger and DiNapoli are holding an “unclaimed funds” event on Thursday, July 10, at the councilman’s district office at 2015 Stillwell Ave., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Experts from the comptroller’s office will be on hand to assist residents in determining if there are any unclaimed funds waiting for them.

“This is an easy and convenient way for you to find out if the state is in possession of any money that is rightfully yours. It only takes a few minutes for a representative from the comptroller’s office to run your name through their database and check for any missing or lost funds. There is nothing quite like found money, so be sure to stop by my office on Thursday for this event, and bring your friends and neighbors,” Treyger said.

“The money belongs to New Yorkers. We want to give it back,” DiNapoli said at an unclaimed funds event he held earlier this year.

New York State is in possession of over $13 billion in lost and unclaimed funds, according to Treyger, who said that the comptroller’s office returns $1 million to residents each day. So far this year, a total of $195,293,757 in funds has been returned.
