ON THIS DAY in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “110 Die in Brooklyn Within 24 Hours.”  The article focused on the death count after a significant heat wave in New York.  Health officials listed as sources said 58 burial certificates were requested as of press time at the Eagle.
“The deaths from the heat in Brooklyn and Manhattan have materially increased to-day over the terrible record of yesterday,” the article wrote. “Prostrations in Brooklyn were not as numerous to-day as yesterday, but a great many were nevertheless reported in both boroughs.”
