ROBOT WORKSHOP will take place today from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Brooklyn Public Library Carroll Gardens Library. The event is a summer reading event and takes place weekly.

“ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT” by Brooklyn author Christopher Beha will be released at BookCourt tonight at 7 p.m. The event includes a reading, audience Q&A and book signing. Beha is a deputy editor at Harper’s, has had reviews published in the New York Times Book Review and is also the author of “What Happened to Sophie Wilder.”

PILATES WITH THE FITNESS GURU will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Empire Fulton Ferry Lawns. The class is meant to teach attendees how to properly activate abdomen muscles and to create stability.

THE DECLARATION OF Independence was first publicly read on this day in 1776. Colonel John Nixon read the Declaration of Independence to residents at Philadelphia’s Independence Square.

JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER was born on this day in 1839. Rockefeller was an oil magnate, industrialist and philanthropist born in Richford, N.Y. By 1870, he had created the world’s largest refining operations, Standard Oil. He quietly bought out competitors, pipelines, train cars, forests and warehouses. Standard Oil was declared a monopoly in 1911. He died in 1937 with a fortune of $1.4 billion.

NELSON ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER was born on this day in 1908. Rockefeller was governor of New York and was nominated as vice president by President Gerald Ford without having been elected. He died in New York City in 1979.

THE LAST MISSION of the space shuttle program launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida in 2011. Atlantis carried supplies for the International Space Station and was a 12-day mission. The shuttle returned safely back to Kennedy Space Center later that month.

ON THIS DAY in 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Lightening, Wind and Rain Round Out Week of Storm.” The article focused on a deadly storm that also damaged Brooklyn property.

“A week remarkable for extreme heat, high percentages of humidity and heavy thunderstorms was rounded out yesterday by almost prostrating temperatures, followed by a storm which at many points on Long Island, particularly at Garden City, approached in severity and general character an out and out tornado,” the article wrote. There was one fatality reported as of that date from the storm.
