Queens author Scott Cheshire will be launching his debut novel, “High as the Horses’ Bridles,” Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the powerHouse Arena in DUMBO. Remarkable in scale — moving from 1980s Queens to sunny present-day California to a tent revival in 19th-century rural Kentucky — “Bridles,” described as “powerful” by Publishers Weekly and “impressively crafted” by Booklist, is a bold, heartbreaking debut.

“Bridles” follows 12-year-old Josiah Laudermilk, a preaching prodigy, who one day delivers an unplanned sermon describing a strange vision that will come to define the rest of his life. Decades later, when Josiah (now Josie) has grown up and long since left the church, he returns home to care for his father, Gill, who day by day is losing his grip on reality. Navigating through his old neighborhood is overwhelmingly nostalgic; when Josie finally gathers the strength to visit his family’s deteriorating old house, he is unprepared for what he discovers.

A story about inheritance and faith, “Bridles” paints an intricate portrait of a father and son divided by a dangerous prophecy, and is delivered by a fresh, inimitable American voice.

The powerHouse Arena is located at 37 Main St. in DUMBO.
