The Federation of Italian American Organizations (FIAO), which sponsors a summer program for children, closed out the season with a celebration that included performances by all the students who attended the program.

The summer program, which is housed at Saint Athanasius Catholic School on Bay Parkway and 61st Street, aims to teach children the importance of knowing oneself and acknowledging the importance of each individual’s talent, according to the FIAO. The participants were encouraged to celebrate their individuality and embrace their interests. The children were also encouraged to be more aware of healthy living habits and lifestyles.

The program provided a safe environment, where socialization and physical fitness were part of each day, according to the FIAO.

The FIAO is a Bensonhurst-based group that provides social service assistance and educational programs to thousands of people in southwest Brooklyn.

Nancy Sottille, Angela Collella and Orsola Bonilla of the FIAO provided leadership for the summer program. FIAO leaders said they were grateful to the Rev. Msgr. David Cassato, the pastor of St. Athanasius Church, and Diane Competello, the principal of St. Athanasius School, for agreeing to provide a space for the summer program.
