ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Cecilie is Safe at Bar Harbor, Me.; Gold Coming Back.”  The article focused on a ship that carried $13,400,000 in treasure to the U.S.
“The North German Lloyd steamship Kronprinzessia Cecilie, carrying more than $10,000,000 in gold and $3,400,000 in silver, and whose whereabouts have been a mystery since she sailed from New York last Tuesday, arrived in the harbor here today,” the article reported.  “The Cecilie dropped anchor here at 6 o’clock this morning, after a forced run of four days, her officers fearing capture.”
