Awesome dragons and fiery lions danced to the beat of ceremonial drums through Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn on Sunday as part of the annual Chinese-American Planning Council’s (CPC) Walk-a-Thon and Family Day.

Hundreds of school children, senior groups and family members, with CPC officials, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez and Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, marched over the Brooklyn Bridge for the event, which raises funds for community services for Chinese kids, seniors and recent immigrants.

CPC board member Veronica Tsang told the Brooklyn Eagle that Sunday’s event was especially meaningful.

“Today we’re celebrating the CPC’s 50th anniversary, a big milestone. The theme is ‘People Helping People,’” she said. “It’s been a year-long focus. We’ve raised money and thought about the people we can help. We’re looking forward to the next 50 years.”

City Tech student Evan Li, group leader at P.S. 69 summer camp in Sunset Park, said the CPC was important because it supported the Chinese-American community. CPC funds P.S. 69’s camp, which provides English learning, services and leadership skills to children over the summer. About half of the kids are immigrants, Li said.

The colorful procession started in Columbus Park in Manhattan then headed over the Brooklyn Bridge to Downtown Brooklyn for the celebration and performances.

The Walk-a-Thon supports social service programs that serve 8,000 people daily. The city’s three largest Chinese-American communities are in the Lower East Side of Manhattan; Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Flushing, Queens.
