Good morning, Brooklyn.  Today is the 217th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Union Bank is to Open by Next Thursday Sure.”  The article focused on the opening of Union Bank, which was previously known as Mechanics and Traders Bank.  
“[Union Bank] announced to-day the election of the new board of directors for the reorganized financial institution,” the article reported.  “The bank and its various branches will positively open for business next week.”

CONRAD AIKEN was born on this day in 1889.  Aiken was a poet, novelist, short-story writer and critic.  He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1930.  He died in 1973.

NEIL ARMSTRONG was born on this day in 1930.  Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon.  He reportedly could fly a plane before he could drive a car.  He was a Navy fighter pilot during the Korean War before his involvement with NASA.  He walked on the moon July 20, 1969.  He died in 2012.

MARILYN MONROE died on this day in 1962.  Monroe was known as the epitome of Hollywood glamour, making 29 films during her career.  Her death at age 36 was due to an overdose of sleeping pills in Los Angeles.

“COVER” by Peter Mendelsund will be released today at the powerHouse Arena from 7 to 9 p.m.  Mendelsund is known for his book designs and for his art direction leadership.  His book focuses on “what we see when we read.”  He designed the cover for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
