ON THIS DAY in 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Whitman Working Hard to Appease Angry Republicans.” The article focused political issues surrounding the district attorney at the time, Charles Whitman.
“District Attorney Charles S. Whitman is ready to abide by the decision of the Hapgood committee, accept the Fusion nomination as candidate for re-election to his present office and support John Purroy Mitchel as the Fusion mayoralty nominee,” the article reported.

LUCILLE BALL was born on this day in 1911. Ball was a television pioneer and comedienne. She is most famous for her 1950s role in “I Love Lucy.” She died on in 1989.

TODAY IS Hiroshima Day. The Hiroshima, Japan, bombings took place on this day in 1945, when an American B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb over the center of the city. Memorial observances take place for Hiroshima Day to remember the victims.

ANDY WARHOL was born on this day in 1928. Warhol was an artist, filmmaker and provocateur. He was born to Czech immigrant parents and is known as a leader of the Pop Art movement, challenging the definition of art. His most famous works feature Campbell’s Soup cans and portraits of artists such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Mao Tse-tung. He died in New York City in 1987.

THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT of 1965 was signed on this day in history. The act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson and attempts to thwart efforts to discriminate against minorities at the polls.
