Musical performances, a scavenger hunt and an outdoor art gallery will all be part of the next Summer Stroll on 3rd as the Bay Ridge event moves south for its next two dates.

The first two editions of Summer Stroll, which took place on July 18 and 25 on Third Avenue between Bay Ridge Avenue and 80th Street, were big hits, according to leaders of the sponsoring organization, Merchants of Third Avenue, who said thousands of people came to enjoy themselves.

Starting on Friday, Aug. 8, Summer Stroll on 3rd will take place on Third Avenue between 80th and 90th streets. The 10-block stretch of the commercial thoroughfare will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. to allow pedestrians to stroll down the middle of the street at their leisure, enjoy drinks and dinner at one of the many outdoor cafes set up by restaurant owners along the route and see great live performances by local talents.

Another Summer Stroll event, also between 80th and 90th streets, will take place on Friday, Aug. 15.

Here’s a taste of what’s in store on Friday night: children’s games outside 8102 Third Ave.; Brooklyn Dance outside 8011 Third Ave.; the Brooklyn Cyclones will be greeting fans outside 8119 Third Ave.; a pet adoption van will be set up at 8209 Third Ave; you can try your hand at golf outside 8225 Third Ave.; the scavenger hunt table will be stationed outside 8312 Third Ave.; performances by the Ridge Chorale/Jeff Samaha Productions group will take place outside 8412 Third Ave.; an outdoor art gallery sponsored by Gallery 364 will be located outside 8601 Third Ave.; and arts and crafts will be for sale outside 8615 Third Ave.; and Narrows Community Theater will perform on the block between 87th and 88th Streets.

In addition, there will be a “Kids Alley” on the block between 87th and 88th streets. Two children-centered businesses on the block, The Art Room and Kaleidoscope Toys, will offer games, face painting, and arts and crafts.

Adding to the ambience will be series of twinkling lights depicting flower pots strewn across the avenue. The whole idea of Summer Stroll, according to the Merchants group, is to give the avenue the feel of a piazza in Venice.

The Merchants, a business group representing storeowners on the busy, commercial thoroughfare, sponsors Summer Stroll on 3rd and works in partnership with local elected officials like state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) and Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) to pull the whole thing off.

Summer Stroll is run under the auspices of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and is part of that agency’s Weekend Walks program, a citywide endeavor designed to open up the streets to pedestrians. There are Weekend Walks events all over the city this summer.
