ON THIS DAY in 1905, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Car Plunges Off L, Killing 11 Persons.” The article focused on a trolley accident that killed 11 people and injured more than 40.
“A switchman’s mistake and a motorman’s carelessness sent a crowded car of a Manhattan elevated train hurtling off the structure into the street at 7 o’clock this morning, smashing the coach into splinters and piling the passengers into a tangled mass of crushed and mangled bodies,” the Eagle reported.

THE ATTACK ON AMERICA took place on this day in 2001.  Terrorists hijacked four planes, piloting two of them into the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.  Passengers on the fourth plane attempted to overcome the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in western Pennsylvania instead of reaching its target in Washington.  The twin towers collapsed about an hour after being hit.  More than 3,000 people died as a result of the attacks.  The hijackers were agents of the Al Qaeda terrorist group led by Islamic extremist Osama bin Laden.  In response, the U.S. launched a war on terrorism.
