ON THIS DAY in 1905, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Wants Conservator for Dr. Frank Freel: Mother of Well-Known Brooklynite Desires Him Committed to Sanitarium.”
The article focused on the doctor and son of a well-known Brooklynite who began hallucinating and was deemed as “unsafe.”
“Mrs. Freel says that her son’s habits became bad and she has been keeping him in a bachelor’s establishment with several servants,” the Eagle reported. “She says that he is now unsafe and asks that his liberty be taken away and that he be committed to a sanitarium.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES was first published on this day in 1851. The Times originally debuted as the New-York Daily Times. The name was changed in 1857.

THE U.S. TOOK OUT its first loan on this day in 1789. The first loan taken out by the U.S., which summed $191,608, was negotiated and secured by Alexander Hamilton. The loan was later known as the Temporary Loan of 1789. It was used without authority of law and paid the salaries of the president, senators, representatives and officers of the first Congress. Repayment was completed on June 8, 1790.

“BLIND,” by Rachel DeWoskin, will be featured at BookCourt today at 7 p.m. The event includes a reading, audience Q&A and book signing.

PHOTOVILLE, a pop-up modular photo gallery, will take place at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 5 Uplands tonight from 4 to 10 p.m. The gallery show is built from shipping containers repurposed into galleries, which exhibit a wide array of photography.

BLACK CHURCHES AND THE Civil Rights Movement: A Legacy of Activism will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Organizations, will moderate a conversation inspired by the experiences of her father who helped lead the charge for social change.
