The Bay Ridge Lawyers Association (BRLA) held its Passing of the Gavel ceremony at Hunters Steakhouse in Bay Ridge on Wednesday night, when Hon. Matthew D’Emic swore in the association’s new officers, directors and incoming president, Lisa M. Becker.

The other officers taking on new roles include Grace M. Borrino as vice president, Stephen A. Spinelli as secretary, Margaret M. Stanton as treasurer and Joseph R. Vasile as corresponding secretary.

Becker, a Staten Island native who has been a member of the BRLA for 15 years and recently recovered from a battle with leukemia, was thrilled to take over the prestigious role.

“These people mean so much to me that I consider this a huge accomplishment to take over the role as president,” Becker said. “I’m very excited and I’m looking forward to a wonderful year.”

Becker and the rest of the BRLA officers have already organized some major events, including the Light the Night Walk on Sept. 27 on the Staten Island Promenade, the annual holiday party that will take place on the Bay Ridge Manor on Dec. 18 and the annual dinner dance that will take place at The Vanderbilt on June 24, 2015.

This is the second year in a row that the BRLA will participate in the Light the Night Walk. Last year they participated in honor of Becker, while she was still sick. Becker hasn’t forgotten how helpful the association was throughout her illness.

“That’s what I love about this association — that there is so much camaraderie and everyone is such great friends,” Becker said. “When I was sick last year, these people banded together and were such a big help to me. They were literally finding any way they could to help me out with whatever I needed. I truly appreciate that.”

Becker offered kind words for immediate past President Joann Monaco. “I hope that I can follow in Joann Monaco’s footsteps, because when she was president, the association never missed a beat,” Becker said. She’s a good person to follow because I’ve learned so much from her.

“Our association has had some amazing presidents, but it’s not intimidating, because when you become the president, everyone does so much to support you that there is no need to feel any kind of anxiety.”

Judge D’Emic noted that adding Becker’s name to the list of presidents only makes the association more prestigious. “She’s an amazing lawyer and the Bay Ridge Lawyers will be in good hands while she is president.”
