PHILIPPINES — Flooding Continues in Philippines: A man dives in the background as rescuers use a rubber dinghy to rescue trapped residents after continues heavy monsoon rains spawned by tropical storm Fung-Wong flooded Marikina city, east of Manila, Philippines and most parts of the metropolis on Friday. Heavy rains due to a storm and the seasonal monsoon caused widespread flooding Friday in the Philippine capital and nearby provinces, shutting down schools and government offices. Local authorities reported thousands were evacuated early Friday from severely inundated communities, some under rapid-flowing flood waters more than neck high.

ENGLAND — Poppies Planted to Remember WWII: Harry Mayhead, Pearly King of Bow Bells who served in Egypt and France for the Royal Army Service Corp. in WWII, plants poppies at the Tower of London, Friday. “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” is the evolving art installation at the tower, and 888,246 poppies will be planted in the moat by volunteers with the last poppy being planted on Nov. 11. Each poppy represents a British or Colonial fatality in the First World War.

INDIANA — One-Room Schoolhouse Restored: Students practice writing with fountain pens Sept. 9 at Simmons School in Hope, Ind. The one-room schoolhouse was moved, restored and reopened 25 years ago, and there will be a celebration Sept. 20 to mark the occasion.
