Good morning, Brooklyn.  Today is the 245th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Major Albert A. Day Dies.”  The article focused on Major Albert A. Day, who was additionally the general agent and corresponding secretary of the Brooklyn Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, passing away the day before after four months of illness.  Day was additionally a lawyer.

CHRISTA MCAULIFFE was born in 1948.  McAuliffe was a 37-year-old high school teacher when she became the first “ordinary citizen” to be in space.  She perished with six crew members in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986.

ON THIS DAY in 1666, the Great Fire of London took place at London’s Pudding Lane.  More than 13,000 houses were destroy, though it is believed that only six lives were lost in the fire.

A ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN MEN’S soccer game will take place tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 5.  The game is at 7 p.m., and the Terriers will be defending their title as Northeast Conference champions.  

“COLD TYPE” by Harvey Araton will be featured at BookCourt today at 7 p.m.  The event includes a reading and book signing.  Araton is a sports columnist for The New York Times and additionally wrote “Driving Mr. Yogi.”  He lives in New Jersey and teaches at Montclair.
