Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is coming to a close, but a group of activists in Bay Ridge is working to make sure September goes out with a bang. Bay Ridge Cares, a non-profit organization that assists families in need, will host a party on Sept. 27 to raise money for the families of children with cancer.

A portion of the funds will be donated to the World Go Gold fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The fundraiser will take place at Saint Patrick Church auditorium on Fourth Avenue and 97th Street from 2 to 5 p.m., immediately after the 48th Annual Ragamuffin Parade in Bay Ridge. The fundraiser is being billed as Bay Ridge Cares’ Second Annual Post-Parade Party. Last year, the group held a party after the parade to raise funds for the Kabel family, whose young daughter Sally Kabel is battling cancer.

The party will be a family-friendly event, according to Bay Ridge Cares leaders. Activities for children will include crafts, face painting and photo opportunities with characters resembling Batman and Elsa from the animated movie “Frozen,” the organizers said.  Adults can enjoy a cash bar with beer and wine, lots of food. There will also be music.

Bay Ridge Cares has been the chief supporter of the Go Gold Bay Ridge campaign to raise awareness for the need for more funding for pediatric cancer research and the Sept. 27 event will be the culmination of these efforts, according to a statement from the organization’s leaders.

Admission to the event is $20 for adults and includes one drink ticket.  Kids can attend for free.

Bay Ridge Cares also spearheaded a recent drive to encourage the neighborhood to “Go Gold” for kids with cancer. More than a dozen volunteers decorated a tree outside Councilmember Vincent Gentile’s office at 8018 Fifth Ave. with gold yarn. Bay Ridge Cares members spent all day on Sept. 7 handing out fliers and gold ribbons in the neighborhood to urge residents to put up the fliers, wear the ribbons and decorate their homes and businesses in gold for the Go Gold Bay Ridge campaign.

Teri Brennan, a member of the Board of Directors of Bay Ridge Cares, organized the Go Gold Bay Ridge effort.

Here are some of the ways residents are being asked to support the “Go Gold” effort: shining yellow light bulbs on their front porches and in their front windows; placing strings of yellow lights around their windows; tying gold bows around trees; and wearing gold ribbons.

The local effort was part of the larger, worldwide “Go Gold’ phenomenon in which cancer advocates marked September by urging the owners of famous buildings to display gold lights in tribute to the courage of children with cancer.
