ON THIS DAY in 1917, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Mitchel in Court Demands Recount; Also Raps Bennett.” The article focused on fraud conflict between the then-Mayor Mitchel and former Sen. W.V. Bennett at the time.  “While Bennett, after three days of statements charging general fraud and unfulfilled promises to start court action to show proof, left town ‘to play golf,’ as he announced, the mayor went into court last night and secured an order looking to the inspection of all the ballots cast for the purpose of determining whether or not there were evidences of fraud,” the Eagle reported.  The mayor later stated that Bennett did not have sustainable charges of fraud.
