SAN FRANCISCO — Calif. DOT Officials Moving Nests from Bridge: This 2012 photo released by the California Department of Transportation shows cormorant birds under the old eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco. Transportation officials are trying to move hundreds of double-crested cormorants and other birds that nest in the 10,000-foot-long steel structure, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday.

GERMANY — Reports Surfaced of Security Guards Abusing Refugees: Refugees line up to apply for asylum at the reception center in Berlin, Germany, on Tuesday. A top government official says all personnel working for security companies at asylum centers will have to undergo a police background screening before working with refugees. The interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Ralf Jaeger on Tuesday announced the new measure after allegations surfaced over the weekend that private security guards had repeatedly abused refugees at an asylum center in Burbach in western Germany.

Eastern Ukraine has suffered the worst violence in more than a week as fighting between pro-Russian rebels and government troops in the region killed at least 12 people and wounded many, officials said Monday.

Anti-government demonstrators led by opposition politicians Imran Khan and Muslim cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri converged on the capital in mid-August, demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s ouster over alleged fraud in last year’s election. Sharif has told the parliament that protestors have damaged the image of Pakistan in the world and also caused huge economic losses in the country.

SYRACUSE — Memorial Service Held for Syracuse Park Shooting: Vanessa Davila, left, and Briyonna Roman, friends of shooting victim Jenna Sweeting-Vigliotti, hold candles at Kirk Park in Syracuse, N.Y., on Monday. They were in the car with Sweeting-Vigilotti when she was shot once in the head on Sept. 26, as she sat in the front passenger’s seat.
