ON THIS DAY in 1904, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Crazed Woman Starving; Barricaded in House.” The article focused on a Brooklyn woman who was barricaded in her house for three days with no food.
“Crazed by the shock of her husband’s death, Mrs. Elizabeth Calder of 232 Graham avenue has barricaded herself in her home and refuses to allow anyone to enter the house, and it is feared by her relatives and friends that the woman is starving herself to death,” the Eagle reported.

MISS AMERICA was first crowned on this day in 1921. Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C., was crowned at the end of the two-day pageant in Atlantic City.

“TARZAN,” “That Girl” and “Star Trek” were premiered on this day in 1966.

“THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW” was premiered on this day in 1986. The daytime talk show was the top-rated show for years and also was the first talk show hosted by an African-American woman. In the mid-1990s, Winfrey was fed up with the “trashy” talk shows and decided to upgrade the quality of topics that her show presented. The last show was on May 25, 2011.

Former President Richard Nixon was pardoned on this day in 1974. Nixon was pardoned for all offenses against the U.S. which he had or may have committed or taken part of during the time period from Jan. 20, 1969, to Aug. 9, 1974.
