ON THIS DAY in 1910, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Eagle Wins, Jury’s Verdict in Coler Suit.” The article focused on a former borough president suing the Eagle over libel.
“At 2:25 o’clock this afternoon, two hours and a half after the case had been placed in its hands, the jury in the Coler-Eagle libel suit brought in a verdict absolutely vindicating the Brooklyn Daily Eagle,” the Eagle reported. “The charge against the Eagle had been that it libeled Mr. Coler, then-borough president of Brooklyn … charging him with having an interest … in certain paving contracts in which Medina sandstone was the material specified.
