The legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight to gain civil rights for Black Americans looms as urgently now as it did 50 years ago. Both the movie “Selma” and the ongoing divisiveness in New York City politics and the NYPD highlight the need for greater respect among New Yorkers. As the legal holiday commemorating Dr. King’s birthday falls this weekend, several churches and schools around Brooklyn are holding services to honor and support his work.

Sunday, Jan. 18:

-Mosaic Baptist Church (761 Park Place), a newly-established congregation, will hold an MLK Day of Diversity service at 4 p.m. The program will include worship, a “Panel Discussion on Race, Dr. King and the NYPD” and a free International Dinner.

The church (www.mosaic-brooklyn.com) is located between Nostrand and Rogers avenues, and is accessible via the 3, 4 A and C trains.

-The Flatbush Seventh-Day Adventist Church is offering a service for “Hope and Healing for Better Police and Community Relations.” Honorary hosts are Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and U.S. Reps Yvette Clarke and Hakeem Jeffries. The service begins at 3 p.m. at the church, 261 East 21st St., in Flatbush.

-Grace Church-Brooklyn Heights will hold its annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day with special readings and music at its 11 a.m. Eucharist.

-Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is the keynote speaker at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights (450 Eastern Parkway), which will celebrate the life and times of Dr. King at its 10:30 a.m. service. The pastor is Rev. Clarence Norman Sr.

-The Abundant Life Center and Hope City Empowerment Center (650 Washington Ave.) celebrates the life of Dr. King at its 11 a.m. service, with keynote speaker Rev. Ojeda Hall of Baltimore. The pastor of Abundant Life is the Rev. Karim Camara, also a member of the New York State Assembly.

Monday, Jan. 19

-Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM, 30 Lafayette Ave.) hosts the borough’s 29th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with keynote speaker Dr. Cornel West, professor at Union Theological Seminary. The doors open at 8 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. program. Free tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-seated basis.

-Emmanuel Baptist Church’s Dr. King celebration brings in keynote speaker Dr. Charles E. Booth, senior pastor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. This service begins at 10 a.m. The church is at 279 Lafayette Ave., near St. James Place, in Clinton Hill.

-Zion Baptist Church (523 Washington Ave.) brings in keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Gus Roman, pastor emeritus of Canaan Baptist Church in Philadelphia, for its annual MLK Memorial Celebration at 11 a.m.

-The 30th Annual Celebration of Dr. King’s Birthday by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is hosted Monday at Prospect Heights High School (883 Classon Ave.). This 1:30 p.m. service became an annual tradition of the late Hon. Major Owens, who represented the 11th Congressional District for 24 years. He died in October 2013.

-Brooklyn College’s 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther, Jr. Tribute Concert takes place at the Walt Whitman Theater (2900 Bedford Ave.). The program begins at 5 p.m., with doors opening an hour before. Although this event is free, tickets are required. State Sen. Kevin Parker sponsors this event.
