ON THIS DAY in 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Only Twenty Men in Jobless Parade; Tilt at Hearing.”

The article focused on a job parade that didn’t receive much participation.

“A clergyman, the Rev. Dr. John Haynes Holmes of the Church of the Messiah, Manhattan, interrupted the proceedings of the Board of Estimate today and arraigned the city for neglecting the problem of the unemployed, which, he said, had reached an acute emergency, with ‘thousands starving in the streets,’” the Eagle reported.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. was born on this day in 1929. King was a black civil rights leader, minister, advocate of nonviolence and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (1964). He was assassinated in 1968. In 1983, Congress set the third Monday in January as a national holiday to recognize King’s birthday.

THE PENTAGON was completed on this day in 1943. The world’s largest office building with 6.5 million square feet of useable space, the Pentagon serves as headquarters for the Department of Defense.

DROP-IN DRAWING, a drawing class, will take place tonight from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Brooklyn Museum. The class explores artists’ processes in a casual environment. The class is open to all ages and is $8 for material fees. Attendees will meet in the Rubin Lobby, first floor.
