Audiences can see a play before its opening night on Broadway by attending a preview performance of the show. But imagine getting the chance to see a play even before it starts previews.

Onstage at Kingsborough, a performing arts program at Kingsborough Community College, is offering theater buffs the ultimate backstage pass.

As part of OnStage at Kingsborough’s Insider’s Look Series, visitors will be able to watch a rehearsal of the Godlight Theatre Company’s production of Emma Reeve’s stage adaptation of “Cool Hand Luke.”

The open rehearsal will take place on Jan. 29 at Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Blvd., in Manhattan Beach at 7 p.m.

Admission to the rehearsal is free, and reservations are not required.

Visitors will be able to see the play’s lead, Lawrence Jansen, and the other actors rehearse their lines onstage.

The world premiere presentation of “Cool Hand Luke” will take place on March 28 at 8 p.m.

The play is based on the Donn Pearce novel, which also was the source for the 1967 Paul Newman film.

The Godlight Theater, which won a Drama Desk Award in 2013, presented “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” last year at Onstage at Kingsborough.

“We are incredibly excited to have Godlight Theatre back after last year’s highly successful production of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’” said Anna Becker, executive director of Onstage at Kingsborough. “Our Insider’s Look presentations are always thrilling because audience members are able to get so close to the performers and get a real peek at the creative process. When they return for the World Premiere, they will be true insiders to the show’s creation.”

Onstage at Kingsborough seeks to bring artistically and culturally diverse performances from masters of the form to the communities within and surrounding the college, according to the program’s directors.  The program strives to create an environment where the arts are an accessible and integral part of life, directors said.

“The 2014-15 season reflects our commitment to present world-class artists in exclusive Brooklyn engagements.  The season of classic and classical performing arts offers performances by companies who set the standard in their field at prices that are a fraction of what audiences would pay elsewhere,” Kingsborough officials said in a statement.

Parking on the campus of Kingsborough Community College is free.
