Lockdown at Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School cancelled after knife mix-up

Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School was placed on lockdown on Wednesday afternoon as police followed up on a report of three black males armed with knives.

The report turned out to be in error, a police spokesperson told the Brooklyn Eagle.

The person making the report “didn’t recognize the individuals were students,” she said.

Nothing criminal was going on, she emphasized. The students may have had “a pair of scissors, and they thought it was knives,” she said.

The Sheepshead Bites blog, in an unconfirmed post, reported that a police source said the “kids were from the shop class in the school and were going to a different floor with these sharp instruments.”

A Level 1 mobilization had been called at the school, located in the Midwood neighborhood.

The NYPD spokesperson told the Eagle that the call had come in at 1:44 p.m. on Wednesday, and a “controlled dismissal” was initiated before the mistake was discovered.

Later in the day, the 70th Precinct tweeted, “No student was in danger. All students dismissed. TY [thank you] School Safety for assistance.”
