Brent Jones made St. Francis Brooklyn history early in the game when he became the school’s all-time assists leader, but it turned out to be bittersweet as Jones missed a shot at the buzzer and the Terriers lost 67-65 to Robert Morris in Brooklyn Heights on Saturday.

“Sometimes you make some, sometimes you miss them,” Jones said. “It’s part of basketball.”

Jones finished with 11 points and nine assists to give him 536 during his career on Remsen Street, a new record. After the game, he was frustrated as St. Francis led Robert Morris in total rebounds, had fewer turnovers and more blocks, but still lost.

“Every stat, we kind of won it all, but there are going to be games like this,” Jones said while shaking his head. “I’d rather a game like this happen in the season than in the NEC playoffs. It’s a lesson learned, we just have to bounce back. We have a game on Thursday and [we’ll] focus on that.”

The two stats Robert Morris did manage to beat St. Francis in were field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage. The Terriers missed 12 shots from the line, which — more than anything else — cost them the game.

“If we hit our free throws we probably win the game, and we didn’t,” said head coach Glenn Braica. “That happens sometimes. It’s a long season. We’ll keep working on them.”

Jones hit a pair of free throws to put St. Francis ahead 65-63 with 1:34 left to play, but Lucky Jones put Robert Morris up with a corner three. With 17 seconds left, St. Francis missed layups from Amdy Fall and Jones.

“We got the stop, the ball bounced around, it bounced out to Lucky Jones and he made a great shot,” Braica said. “That happens sometimes. That’s the way college basketball is. You accept it and move on.”

Jalen Cannon also made a bit of history as he finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds to move into fourth place all-time on the Northeast Conference’s rebounding list. He is on pace to finish first all-time in the conference.
“Jalen is great,” Braica said of his senior power forward. “It’s come to the point where you expect a double-double every night from him and there aren’t too many guys you can say that about.”

Brooklyn-native Tyreek Jewell also had a big game as he tied a season-high with 15 points and five rebounds and provided a big spark in the second half.

With the loss, the Terriers fall to 12-9 overall this season and 6-2 in conference games. There are still 10 games left in their regular season with the next one coming at home against Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday.
