Author Menna van Praag will be appearing at BookCourt in Cobble Hill on Jan. 13 to launch her latest book, “The Dress Shop of Dreams” (Ballantine Trade Paperback Original), a fairytale-like story about second chances.

The novel — which Kirkus has called “a brightly colored fabulist confection” — follows Cora Sparks, who, since her parents’ mysterious deaths, has spent her days hidden in the safety of her university lab or at her grandmother Etta’s dress shop. While Etta’s charming tiny store appears quite ordinary to passersby, there is more to the shop than meets the eye.

The Jan. 13 event will begin at 7 p.m. BookCourt is located at 163 Court St. in Cobble Hill.
